Good Omens 30th Birthday Party

Guide to Using Zoom, for Participants

We put together this guide to using Zoom for the Good Omens 30th Birthday Party, and are publishing it here for anyone else running or joining virtual events. Some of the details here might be specific to our event, so feel free to copy and adapt this for your purposes.

The Party will take place over Zoom, a video conferencing platform. In this guide we’ll explain some of the features we plan to use, but the only thing you need to know beforehand is how to join the party: we’ll explain the rest as we go.

Note: you do not need to register for a Zoom account in order to join the party

You will need:

  • A computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone connected to the internet
  • A speaker or headphones
  • If you wish, a webcam and microphone (these may be built in to your device)

Note that we strongly recommend using a computer or laptop if possible, for full functionality. If you wish to participate in the games, we recommend that you have a separate internet-connected device (ideally a smartphone) available.

How to join the party

Simply click on the link provided in the email to join, or go to the Zoom website and click on "Join a Meeting" where you can enter the meeting ID and password provided by email.

Zoom works on PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android. If you already have Zoom installed, you will be prompted to open it. If you don’t, you’ll be given the choice to download the software or join through your web browser. For full functionality (participating in polls and using chat functions) you will need to download the software, but it’s not compulsory.

The link will be available from 15 minutes before the start of the party. Please join early to make sure your connection is working before we begin.

Once you're in the party

The Zoom menu bar will appear at the bottom of your screen. If you don’t see it, move your mouse slightly to make it appear.

  • Mute/ unmute your audio (note that in the main room you can only be unmuted by the host).
  • Start/stop your video. It’s entirely your choice whether you share your video.
  • Click on “Participants” for the option to raise your hand.
  • The Chat function allows you to send a message privately to one person, or to everyone in the room.

  • Audio mute and unmute

It’s best practice to keep your microphone muted when you’re not talking, to minimise audio feedback. Due to the number of participants, everyone will be automatically muted in the main room unless unmuted by the host, but in breakout rooms you can control this yourself. Mute your audio by clicking on the microphone icon located in the lower left-hand corner of the menu bar.

The chat feature provides the ability to send instant messages during the session. You can send private chat to one person or message all participants. This is the best way to ask a question of the hosts; we’ll respond as soon as we can.

To send a message, click on “Chat” in the main menu and select who to message. Messages are sent to everyone by default, but you can also select an individual’s name to start a private chat.

    How to Raise Your Hand

At various points during the event, we may ask you to raise your hand.

On the desktop app, click on “Participants” and click the button labelled “Raise Hand”

You can lower it by clicking the same button, now labelled “Lower Hand.”

On mobile, the Raise Hand option is available through the “…” menu at the lower right corner of the screen.

    Breakout Rooms

Just like a real party, we want you to have the option to chat with fellow Good Omens fans as an alternative to participating in the games. To enable this, we’re using Zoom’s Breakout Rooms feature.

During the intro to the party, you will be invited to join a breakout room and you will see a notification like this:

You can choose to join immediately, or click on “Later”. If you choose the Later option, you will see a Breakout Rooms option in the main meeting menu:

You can use this button to join your breakout room at any time.

Once you’ve been invited to a breakout room, you can move between that room and the main room at any time, but only the host is able to allocate you to a different breakout room.

Please note that breakout room allocation will be done at random, as this is the only way we can manage with a large number of participants. We encourage you to mingle and meet new people, but if you feel very strongly that you want to be moved to the same room as your friend, please send a private message to the host (Rachael Livermore) with the name of the room you want to be moved to.

Inside the breakout room, you will be able to unmute your microphone and chat to your fellow fans. We are not able to moderate the breakout rooms, but note that our code of conduct still applies. If you need help at any time, you can click on the “Ask for Help” button to invite the host to your room.

While you’re inside the breakout room, messages will appear on your screen to notify you when new games are about to start in the main room. If you wish to move back to the main room, you can do so via the “Leave Breakout Room” button at the lower right of your screen. You will be prompted to choose whether to leave the breakout room or the entire meeting.

Once back in the main room, you can choose to return to your breakout room at any time.

    For More Help

If you have any trouble using Zoom, or need help understanding the menus if you’re using a different version, you can try the Zoom Help Centre.

For any questions specific to the The Ineffable Con, you can contact the hosts at or on Twitter (@TheIneffableCon) prior to the event, or via the Chat function during the party.
