n the European Middle Ages, the presumed existence of spiritual entities gave rise to a host of philosophical puzzles—in science as well as theology. Are angels smarter than humans? Do they occupy physical space? When carrying out temptations, do demons still have to obey the laws of nature? And what about the whole “dancing on the head of a pin” business…?
In this talk, a historian of science illustrates some of the ways in which angels and demons were causing trouble in human culture long, long before the writing of Good Omens… and how some of these ineffable puzzles eventually made their way into the book and show.
